VTA Bus Driver

What are the required driver licenses?

Position of C California license at the time of appointment and at minimum a class B permit with 2 endorsements, passenger and air brake endorsements.  If you have a Class A, you will need a passenger endorsement.

Do I need to go through training if I have my Commercial License with required endorsements?

Yes, even if you have your commercial license you will still need to go through and pass VTA’s operator training course.

What if I have points on my driving record?

Driving record may not have more than 3 moving violations or 1 cell phone violation within the last 3 years.  All others will be considered case by case.

Is a high school diploma required?

Not necessarily, Sufficient training and experience in customer service may make up for lack of High School Diploma or GED.

How do you move up pay range?

Move up pay scale over 3 year span, Pay bump every 6 months after graduation.

How long is Bus Training?

You will be is Bus Operator Trainee for 9 weeks.

Once I apply, What are the next steps?

If your application is accepted, you will be invited to a future tests/interview event at VTA.  This day will consist of a written exam, performance exam and interview. If you pass, you will be placed on a eligibility list for a future training class.  The Eligibility list will be valid for up to year.

Do I get to pick bus route/shift after graduation?

Yes, but (per union contract) Routes and shifts are decided based on seniority by hire date.

You must be available to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours. VTA is a 24/7 operation.
